In my video installation Object Number One a naked man stands still for 13 minutes, he is literally turned on his side. Within his stillness there is extraordinary amounts of movement. The video is projected on a rear projection screen so not only does the man turn into an object by being turned on his side, but also the screen becomes an object - you can walk right up to it without interfering with the light source. The phallus is in the center of the screen at eye level, and he is projected 8 feet wide. His tiny gestures; a move of a finger or a toe or opening/closing of his eyes create excitement and tension, possibly even a narrative outside of the video itself, with whatever constructs the viewer brings to it. The conceptual side addresses the universality of the male in our culture, how if you want to find a universal figure in any genre, it would be a male. So, the elephant in the room is named and put right in front of us all.
