Artist Statement

My work has always been about something. It's usually about a way of seeing the world, a perspective that is outside from the mainstream. Gender and sexuality are often the topics, and you might call me a feminist. It always shows up in the work.

My work is conceptual while engaging with formal elements and with the medium itself. The work is minimal. I am looking to use the fewest gestures to get to where I am going.

I was always been interested in exploring the materials and formal nature of video, but was worried that would result in a stiff approach to media making. That I'd have to use some formulaic structure and have it be devoid of meaning and concept. In my new work, I've found a way to have it all. In my video installation Object Number One a naked man stands still for 13 minutes, he is literally turned on his side. Within his stillness there is extraordinary amounts of movement. The video is projected on a rear projection screen so not only does the man turn into an object by being turned on his side, but also the screen becomes an object - you can walk right up to it without interfering with the light source. The phallus is in the center of the screen at eye level, and he is projected 8 feet wide. His tiny gestures; a move of a finger or a toe or opening/closing of his eyes create excitement and tension, possibly even a narrative outside of the video itself, with whatever constructs the viewer brings to it. The conceptual side addresses the universality of the male in our culture, how if you want to find a universal figure in any genre, it would be a male. So, the elephant in the room is named and put right in front of us all.

I'm always asking a lot from the viewer. I require a response. It may be as simple as walking away, or if I am lucky, the viewer might bring their own cultural baggage, their own formal concerns, their own experience with art or intellect and engage with the work. My goal is to use small gestures of content and form, to revel in the abstractions and ultimately say something about how I see the world.
